FAQ
What is a hackathon?
A hackathon is best described as an “invention marathon”. Anyone who has an interest in technology attends a hackathon to learn, build & share their creations over the course of a weekend in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. You don’t have to be a programmer and you certainly don’t have to be majoring in Computer Science.
Does HackTrent help with travel reimbursements?
Unfortunately, HackTrent isn’t able to provide hackers with travel reimbursements. We have in certain cases provided it in the past but we’re always on the hunt to find more sustainable ways to bring more students to hackathons.
MLH Code Of Conduct
For more information regarding MLH's code of conduct, please visit MLH Code of Conduct: https://github.com/MLH/mlh-policies/blob/main/code-of-conduct.md.
I just graduated, can I still come to an event?
Yes. Anyone who has graduated within the last 12 months is still eligible to attend an HackTrent. After that, there’s plenty of non-student hackathons that exist for you to consider attending.
What if I don’t know how to code?
Not a problem! The entire Major League Hacking team knew very little when they each attended their very first hackathon. It’s entirely irrelevant what your experience is going into a hackathon, it’s more about your interest in technology. Every HackTrent Member Event is passionate about making their hackathons very welcoming and beginner-friendly. If you’re wanting to learn how to code outside of a hackathon, there’s a fantastic blog post that you should read. After, you should check out the following: Treehouse, Codecademy and the Major League Hacking blog to get started.
Who can participate?
Students of any education level from anywhere in the world are eligible to apply for Hack Trent! All attendees must be 18 years or older to participate.
How much does it cost to attend Hack Trent?
Admission to Hack Trent is completely free! We will also provide food and accommodation for the entire event, as well as all the mentorship our hackers need to build something incredible.
What if I’ve never been to a hackathon before?
Hack Trent welcomes students of all skill levels. Many students attend Hack Trent as their first hackathon, and they always have a blast! We’ll provide mentors and workshops to help you with your project; hackathons can be a great place to learn new skills in a short amount of time. Just be eager to learn, and excited to meet lots of awesome people.
How many people can be on a team?
Hackers may form teams of up to 3 people. There are no restrictions for who they can be, so you can team up with hackers from any school, country, or experience level. Teams can be formed before or during the event at hackers’ own discretion.
Will Hack Trent 2025 happen in person or virtually?
Hack Trent 2025 will be an in-person hackathon, hosted at Trent University's Peterborough Campus in Ontario, Canada. Stay tuned to hear the latest updates by following our social media channels (@hacktrentu on Instagram and @HackTrent on LinkedIn).
